Road Improvements - July 2006

The changes at Studley Green for which we have campaigned, together with the new pedestrian crossing on the Marlow Road are now completed.

Studley Green Crossing after

Marlow Road Crossing

However on the Marlow Road/A40 junction the Bucks County Council Road Safety Assessment has unfortunately come out with a rejection of the proposed alterations - which were purely changes to the painted lines - on the grounds that it would be dangerous for pedestrians crossing at the junction (as if it was not dangerous at the moment).

The Council has put in a plan for a re-formed junction including a refuge island, but currently cannot promise whether it will be in this year’s budget (2006-07)”

Community Meeting 6th July 2006

A Community Meeting, co-ordinated by Stokenchurch Parish Council, was held on 6th July 2006 - an opportunity for local residents to raise further matters of interest and problems within the community.

Those present mentioned a number of the good things about living in Stokenchurch and Radnage but, inevitably, many raised a number of issues and areas for improvement. These included:-

  • High-speed traffic, especially along the A40. There was welcome for the recent new speed limits, but doubts about their effective enforcement.
  • Traffic on Mill Road, especially industrial traffic.
  • Motorway noise - An update on the work on M40 Chiltern Environmental Group was given
  • Noise from A40 "due to poor surface".
  • The poor condition of roads and pavements generally.
  • Concerns over the application by the Kings Arms Hotel to extend licensing hours to 2 am. together with the long-term building work there and “smelly bins”
  • Young (under-age?) people obtaining alcohol from off-licence.
  • Farm bird-scarers.
  • Off-road bikes on roads and in woods, especially in and around East Wood.
  • Perception locally of poor police response / presence.
  • Some concerns about local public transport, especially difficulties for the infirm reaching the medical centre.
  • Untaxed cars - this was mostly but not entirely about those in Kings Arms.

A further meeting is now planned for September when these issues will be discussed again with representatives of Wycombe District Council and other bodies.

2006 - Update

WHAT ARE OUR ACHIEVEMENTS?

We have campaigned for and helped to achieve the following:

  • Bus services from Stokenchurch to High Wycombe in the evening and at weekends.
    • A peak hour link with the Oxford Tube at Lewknor for services to Oxford and London.
    • Contributed to the Bucks County Council Local Transport Plan.
  • Seen the opening of a police office in Stokenchurch.
  • Much improved recycling facilities.
  • Carried out litter picks and organised ‘environmental’ walks.
  • Witnessed a much faster response rate to the removal of abandoned vehicles.
  • Campaigned for a review of the speed limits in the area and for other road safety issues including unsafe road junctions and the need for crossing facilities in Studley Green.
  • One of our members works closely with the M40 Chilterns Environmental Group, campaigning for quieter road surfaces and other environmental protection from the motorway.
  • Seen improvements in the children’s playgrounds in Radnage, Studley Green and Stokenchurch.
  • Lobbied for a skateboard park in Stokenchurch and for a cycle loop to Radnage and Studley Green.
  • One of our number is a member of the STOPAG team, helping the elderly and housebound in Stokenchurch.
  • And finally we have contributed to the Wycombe District Council’s successor to the current Wycombe Plan.

WHAT WE HAVE NOT ACHIEVED – YET!

  • Getting a gym installed in the Stokenchurch Community Centre in Tippings Way.
  • Establishing proper access to the tennis courts at the Community Centre.
  • Actually getting the skateboard park in Stokenchurch.
  • Having a decent regular bus service to Oxford.
  • Maintaining the move to more ‘kerbside’ collections of recyclable’ household waste.
  • Tidying up Muds Bank and improving the facilities there.
  • Helping to improve road safety by monitoring the implementation of the plans that are about to come to fruition.

We will continue to make every effort to help make these things happen.
